Known as the mountain of spring azaleas and autumn silver grass, Hwaaksan is the main mountain of Changnyeong-eup and, together with Gwallyongsan, forms the Hwaaksan Provincial Park. Hwaaksan is synonymous with silver grass, featuring a vast plain of about 60,000 pyeong with a ten-ri silver grass field. The silver grass grows much taller than a person. It takes just over an hour to walk around this area. In autumn, the largest nighttime festival in Korea is held here, attracting about 10,000 people from across the country. The festival includes a mountain spirit ritual, a memorial ceremony for righteous army soldiers, and a torchlight procession praying for reunification, creating a spectacular scene. Hwaaksan is also famous for its azaleas, which line the 6.5 km ridge trail leading to the summit of Gwallyongsan.
The starting point is Changnyeong. Bus F91 runs six times a day from Changnyeong-eup to Okcheon-ri. Directions: Gyeongbu Expressway - Kumho Junction - Guma Expressway - Changnyeong IC - Okcheon-ri.
