Introduction

Dongheon is a local government office building of the Joseon Dynasty where the county magistrate carried out general administrative tasks, judicial affairs, and other official work. Hongsan Dongheon is the dongheon building of the Joseon-era Hongsahyeon government office located in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. After gaining power, Heungseon Daewongun renovated government buildings nationwide to establish the dignity of government offices; as part of this, in the 8th year of King Gojong's reign (1871), the county magistrate Jeong Gi-hwa built this building. After liberation, it was used as the Hongsan branch office, and in 1984 Buyeo-gun restored it to its current form, with seven bays in front and two bays on the side, featuring a central open hall with ondol rooms of different sizes on either side. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof (paljakjibung), shaped like the character for 'eight' from the side, symbolizing the dignity of the government office. The Ijeongwoo House in front of the Dongheon served as the government office gate and prison hall. Nearby tourist attractions include Nop Sal-i Tourism, Bobsang, Hongsan Gaksa, Seongilsa, and Hongik Hyanggyo.
