Browsing around Gukje Market

It is said that to truly see the character of a region, one should visit its market. Markets, pulsating with vibrant life, evoke childhood memories and continue to maintain the closest relationship with our lives today. Street foods that can fill hungry stomachs even on a light budget are still loved by market vendors and create the unique street culture of markets. Gukje Market was the place where new goods were first introduced through trade, and Bupyeong Market, the oldest traditional market in the Jung-gu area, has recently gained attention for its night market. This area was home to many theaters, including the birthplace of the film industry, Chosun Kinema Co., and there remains a commemorative plaza honoring the Busan International Film Festival, which inherits that spirit. Let's start an interesting exploration of various concept flea markets. Source: Busan Tourism Organization

After the liberation on August 15, a few theaters appeared in the Nampodong theater district, and by the 1960s, around 20 theaters had clustered around BIFF Plaza. On September 13, 1996, the 1st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) was held to create a small but prestigious film festival. Along with the festival, the theater district was renovated and named BIFF Plaza. BIFF Plaza hosted the BIFF opening eve events and major BIFF activities such as famous filmmakers' handprinting ceremonies. However, as the Busan Cinema Center was built in Haeundae, the main events moved there. Yet, many traces of the festival's early days remain, and film screenings continue. This concentration of premiere theaters in one place is unique not only in Asia but also in Europe and holds infinite potential. Recently, it has evolved into a complex cultural space offering shopping and tourism alongside films, attracting many young people and playing a major role in revitalizing the local commercial district.

Busan Bupyeong Kkangtong Market became known as Kkangtong Market after the Korean War when the US military stationed there, leading to the smuggling of various goods along with military supplies, especially canned goods like fruit and fish. It was also called 'Dottegi Market,' as goods were supplied here from all over the country, making it a major market. Due to its large size and variety of foreign goods, it was nicknamed 'International Market.' While the market has somewhat shrunk with the approval of various imports, its reputation and vitality remain strong. Today, it handles liquor, clothing, decorations, accessories, fashion goods, and some imported electronics like mini cassette players. Along the approximately 110m-long market street, there are 11 local food stalls, 6 multicultural food stalls including Japanese and Filipino cuisine, and 13 clothing and accessory stalls. Twice daily at the market entrance and the central intersection, magic and guitar performances offer additional entertainment, and vibrant LED lights welcome visitors beside the market. ◎ Travel info to experience Hallyu charm - Variety show : Bupyeong Kkangtong Market, where you can feel the culture of Korea and Busan, was featured in the reality variety program 'NewJeans Code IN Busan.' This market offers cuisine and goods from various countries as a multicultural market. If you are planning a trip to Busan, visiting Bupyeong Kkangtong Market to experience Korea’s traditional culture, food, and heritage is recommended.
