Introduction

Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong (Cultural Property Name: Busan Sujeong-dong Japanese-style House) is a Japanese-style building built in 1943. On a spacious site, there is a three-section gate with a gable roof, and one main building facing south. The right side of the main building's entrance is made of brick (masonry), while most of the rest is constructed as a Japanese-style wooden house. Currently, part of the first floor has been remodeled into an ondol room, but the second floor retains the original form with features typical of Japanese-style houses, including an engawa (veranda), a corridor with wooden flooring, and tatami rooms. Inside the tatami room, detailed decorations such as tokonoma, tsukeshoin, meishoji, tatami mats, and Japanese-style window patterns are preserved in their original state. It has well-maintained exterior elements of a high-class Japanese-style building, and especially on the second floor, the spatial layout and decoration strictly follow the traditional Japanese residential style. It is evaluated as a space of important documentary value for the study of modern residential architecture and lifestyle during the Japanese colonial period. (Source: Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong website)
