Julpohang was historically a distribution center for agricultural and marine products in the southern part of Buan County. Along with Beopseongpo in Jeollanam-do and Seocheon in Chungcheongnam-do, it was one of the three major ports on the southern west coast. During the croaker fishing season, many merchants gathered around the Chilsan and Wido coastal fishing grounds, actively trading and selling croaker and salted seafood. However, due to reclamation of Gomsoman, its former glory has disappeared. Julpomyeon’s Julpori Julpohang market is held on the 1st and 6th of each month. Since the late Joseon period, it has been a market where merchant activities had significant influence, with active trading of grains, fish, and salted seafood. Yet, with the development of transportation, its functions have been overtaken by Buan and Jeongeup, and the market has greatly declined.
