Introduction

예당 시장은 미질이 뛰어난 예당 쌀 거래 시장으로 유명하다. 한때는 예당 시장에서 거래되는 쌀이 500가마를 상회하였고 대부분 전문 도매 상인들에 의해 부산, 광주 등 대도시로 직송되는 등 거래가 활발하였으나 양곡 도정업의 발달과 수송 체계의 개선으로 지금은 실소비 위주의 소량만 거래되고 있을 뿐이다. 미곡 위주의 곡물거래 중심에서 잡곡류의 소규모 곡물거래로 변화되고 대부분의 시장과 마찬가지로 돼지, 닭, 오리 등과 농·수산물 그리고 잡화류가 주로 거래되고 있다.
