Onyang Oncheon is the oldest recorded hot spring in Korea, with a history spanning about 1,300 years from the Baekje and Silla periods. It has been functioning as an actual hot spring bath for about 600 years. Notably, during the Joseon Dynasty, several kings including King Sejong, Sejo, Hyeonjong, Sukjong, Myeongjong, Yeongjo, and Jeongjo built royal palaces here and stayed for rest or treatment; records and relics of this remain today. The spring water has a high temperature of around 57℃. Its main component is radium-containing manitaon, featuring slightly alkaline quality and abundant quantity. It is known to be highly effective for neuralgia, arthritis, skin diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, hypertension, and various adult diseases as well as skin beautification. Besides excellent water quality, over 120 lodging facilities and hot spring baths are concentrated here, making it a major tourist attraction. The district also includes cultural properties such as 'Sinjeongbi,' built by Sejo to auspiciously mark the spring's emergence, and 'Yeonggodae,' built to commemorate Crown Prince Jangheon (Sado Seja) who practiced martial arts here.
Onyang Hot Springs is the oldest hot springs complex in Korea, a place where the kings of Joseon (1392-1897) recuperated and bathed, thanks to its proximity to Seoul. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was a popular honeymoon destination. The water here has a temperature of about 44-60℃ and contains substances that are beneficial for the human body. The area boasts a large number of hotels and water parks.
The Ichungmugong Historic Monument, erected in front of Onyang Oncheon Station, was established in 1951 by the Ichungmugong Memorial Project Committee using public donations to pass down the achievements of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598) to future generations. The monument inside the pavilion consists of a granite turtle-shaped pedestal with a stele placed on top. The inscription on the stele describes how Admiral Yi Sun-sin sacrificed his life fighting the Japanese invaders during the Imjin War to save the country. The plaque was written by then Vice President Yi Si-yeong (1868–1953), and the inscription by Jeong In-bo (1893–1950), notable for being Jeong In-bo’s last writing before his abduction during the Korean War and for using an easily readable mixed Korean-Chinese script, uncommon in inscriptions of the time. In 1984, it was designated as a cultural heritage material of Chungcheongnam-do in recognition of its value. The site is conveniently accessible in front of Onyang Oncheon Station on the Janghang Line railroad and Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1. Nearby attractions include Onyang Oncheon, Onyang Folk Museum, and Sinjeongho, which can be visited together.
