Have you taken a trip to welcome the New Year? For the crowded first travel destination of the year, I revisited Andong, where I traveled last winter a year ago. Some say that visiting the same place again lessens the excitement, but there are places that grow more beloved as memories accumulate with each walk. Andong is such a place. Spending the New Year in Andong, which is as slow as it is charming, was peaceful and relaxing.

The name Wolyeonggyo was derived from the connection of Wolyeongdae, which was submerged due to dam construction and relocated here, as well as referencing the place names Wolgok-myeon and Eumdalgol. The mountainous terrain surrounding the Nakdong River and the dam form a fence-like landscape that deeply impresses the moonlit night sky on one's heart. Wolyeonggyo is a structure that showcases this natural scenery, but more importantly, it was meant to long commemorate the beautiful and noble love of the couple Lee Eung-tae and his wife who lived in this area. For the husband who passed first, a pair of straw shoes made from the wife's hair was symbolically included in the bridge's shape. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Korean Wave - It is a place where Yeongsik and Hyunsook, contestants of the 16th season of the entertainment show "I am Solo," enjoyed a walk in hanbok. Perhaps thanks to the romantically enhanced atmosphere with nighttime lighting, the two reaffirmed their feelings for each other. Like Yeongsik and Hyunsook, you can enjoy a moonlit walk or create special memories by riding a moon boat gently floating on the lake to admire the view of Wolyeonggyo from the water.
In the 1830s, the Andong area had several traditional markets held on specific days. Specifically, the market days included Pungsan Market on the 2nd and 7th days, Yeonghang and Sanhari Markets on the 5th and 10th, Yean Eupnae Market on the 1st and 6th, Ungcheon Market on the 3rd and 9th, and Gumi, Dodong, and Ucheon Markets on the 6th and 10th, forming the market zone of the Andong region. Later, by 1909, Bunaejang, which opened on the 2nd and 7th days, prospered into a large market where agricultural products, cattle, fish, and specialties such as Andongpo and Andong Soju were actively traded. In 1963, when Andong-eup was promoted to Andong-si, Bunaejang and Sindangjang became permanent markets, but after the inauguration of the unified Andong city in 1995, the traditional markets such as Pungsanjang, Sin Market, Gudamjang, Jungrijang, Unsanjang, Gilan Market, Songsajang, Woncheon Market, Nokjeon Market, and Seobu Market continue to this day in the area. However, except for Pungsanjang and Sin Market, their scale is minimal. Markets are widely held throughout downtown Andong, with representative places including Gu Market, Sin Market, Bukmun Market, and Seobu Market. The main product sold at Andong Market is hemp fabric, Andong is known as the home of hemp. Andong hemp is highly absorbent, breathable, and durable, making it one of the top natural fibers for summer fabrics alongside Hansan's semo-si. The soil in this area, mixed with clay and sand, is suitable for growing tall, evenly knotted, and purple-colored hemp. The price of Andongpo varies according to the thickness of the thread.
Hahoe Village is a typical clan village where the Pungsan Ryu (柳) family has lived for generations, embodying the beauty of traditional Korean houses. It is also the birthplace of prominent Joseon Dynasty Confucian scholars Gyeomam Ryu Un-ryong and Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong. On April 21, 1999, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited on her third day in Korea, making it even more famous as a place of Korean tradition. The name Hahoe (河回) originates from the Nakdong River flowing eastward in an S-shape, surrounding the village. To the east is Hwasan, a branch of the Taebaek Mountains, whose ridges extend to the village forming low hills. Houses are arranged facing lower ground around the hills, resulting in their orientations varying in all directions (east, west, south, and north). At the village center stand large tile-roofed houses of the Ryu family, surrounded by well-preserved thatched-roof houses. The Nakdong River flows leisurely in front of the village, with the strikingly steep Buyongdae cliff, an endless white sandy beach, and dense pine forests creating a magnificent landscape. In front of Buyongdae, the waterway opens again, allowing the use of ferries. Hahoe Village offers the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori mask dance as a permanent performance and holds the annual Andong International Mask Dance Festival every autumn. Nearby attractions include Bongjeongsa Temple, Gosan Seowon Academy, Gwiraejeong Pavilion, Gye-myung Mountain Natural Recreation Forest, Hakga Mountain Natural Recreation Forest, and Waryongsan Mountain, offering various sights. Notably, on July 31, 2010, Andong Hahoe Village and Gyeongju Yangdong Village were inscribed as 'Historic Villages of Korea' on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. With their inclusion, Korea's world heritage sites number ten, following Seokguram and Bulguksa, Haeinsa Janggyeong Panjeon, Jongmyo Shrine (1995), Changdeokgung Palace, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (1997), Gyeongju Historic Areas, Gochang, Hwasun, and Ganghwa Dolmen sites (2000), Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes (2007), and Joseon Royal Tombs (2009). Representative local foods in Hahoe include Andong soju, Heotjesatbap (a banquet-style rice dish emerging from the many renowned seowon academies), Andong salted mackerel, and Andong noodles. ◎ Travel Information to Experience the Charm of Hallyu - In the drama , numerous sparks approach while sliding down a rope from a 64m cliff. Egg-shaped fires float gently down the river, and with the shout 'Nakhwa!', large fireworks cascade like a waterfall below the cliff. The Korean-style fire festival Seonyu Julbulnori is a grand purification ritual embodying the wishes of those gathered. Gusanyeong, determined to live by her own will and not for anyone else, smiles brightly amid the starlit hopes at a moment of visual peril.
