Yeonggwang Chili Pepper Specialty Market originated from a traditional market held at the Jeollanam-do Yeonggwang-gun Yeonggwang-eup Hanjeon Intersection where chili peppers were bought and sold, officially designated as a specialty market in April 1995. Unlike other markets, it deals exclusively with chili peppers and has grown to become one of the nation's top three chili pepper markets alongside Eumseong in Chungbuk and Yeongyang in Gyeongbuk. The 'Yeonggwang Taeyangcho' chili pepper grown in Yeonggwang's fertile yellow soil is cultivated with sea breeze and dried in sun and wind, resulting in a bright red color, thick flesh, and a savory flavor that balances spiciness and sweetness. For this reason, Yeonggwang Taeyangcho is also called 'Yeonggwang Yanggeon.' Recently, through modernization projects, the market has continuously developed by installing a large symbol sign with red and green chili peppers and an arcade. Moreover, on the 1st and 6th of each month, an open-air market is held, offering a variety of vegetables and specialty products from Yeonggwang in addition to chili peppers, making it worthwhile to visit and explore together.
