Songjeon Beach, located in Songjeon-ri, Sonyang-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, features a fine sandy beach that stretches 900m in length and 80m in width. It is the second longest sandy beach in Yangyang after Naksan Beach, with clean water where clam digging is also possible. The beach is open annually from mid-July to late August. Because it is not well known, visitors can enjoy it comfortably even during crowded vacation periods. Behind the sandy beach is a dense pine forest, and Yangyang Auto Camping Site is a 10-minute walk away. Camping on the sand with tents is allowed. Additionally, there is one of the Korean Peninsula's top prehistoric archaeological sites nearby, allowing visitors to enjoy both beach activities and historic site tours. There are many tourist sites easily accessible, including Hajodae and Hajodengdae Lighthouses, Osaek Mineral Spring, Osaek Hot Springs, Naksansa Temple, Odaesan National Park, and Seoraksan National Park.
This is a three-story stone pagoda standing on the site of Jinjeonsa Temple. Jinjeonsa is said to have been founded by Monk Doiguksa during the Unified Silla period, and roof tile fragments inscribed with ‘Jinjeon [陳田]’ were discovered near the site, revealing the temple's name. The pagoda represents a typical form of the Unified Silla era, with a three-story body placed on a two-tiered base. The lower tier of the base features heavenly beings wearing flowing garments, while the upper tier depicts the vigorous Eight Deva Generals seated on clouds holding weapons. Each body stone and roof stone of the pagoda is made from a single piece; the first body stone has various carved Buddha images. The roof stones have slightly upturned eaves at the four corners, giving a lively beauty, and each underside has five layers of supports. Only the base stones remain at the top of the third roof stone; all ornamental headpieces have been lost. Overall, this pagoda is well-balanced, and the uplifted eaves at the four corners add to its graceful beauty. It is one of the representative stone pagodas of the Unified Silla period. The beautiful carvings on the base and the refined Buddha sculptures on the first body stone evoke the grandeur of Jinjeonsa.
Located a 1-minute drive from Naksan Beach, this Korean restaurant offers a variety of fresh seafood and sashimi to enjoy after swimming. It mainly sources live fish from Geojin Port, Daejin Port, the South Sea, and Jumunjin, using them within the same day. Freshness can be directly verified through the live fish in the large aquarium. The interior is clean and bright, with wooden tables blending harmoniously with the pillars that preserve the natural look of the wood, creating a unique atmosphere. The main menu is live fish sashimi, but you can also enjoy assorted mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), sea urchin rice, squid sashimi bibimbap, and other varied dishes. Soups such as saengtae jjigae (pollock stew) and altang (roe stew) are also praised for their refreshing taste. Naksansa Temple, which features beautiful coastal cliffs and many historic sites, is nearby and worth visiting before or after your meal.
Naksansa Temple is a famous tourist attraction and a site of great historical value representing Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It is an ancient temple founded by monk Uisang in the 11th year of King Munmu of Silla (671) and is counted among Korea's three major pilgrimage sites for Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva along with Ganghwa Bomunsa Temple and Namhae Boriam Hermitage. The temple, with its breathtaking natural scenery overlooking the East Sea, is one of the eight scenic spots of Gwandong (eight scenic spots in Gangwon Province’s Yeongdong area). Its beauty has been celebrated in numerous classical texts and poems since ancient times. Naksansa has undergone several reconstructions and restorations and holds several cultural assets. These include the 16-meter-high Haesugwaneum statue, Uisangdae Pavilion built on a coastal cliff which is a famous East Sea sunrise spot, Hongryeonam Hermitage overlooking the sea, Naksansa Seven-story Stone Pagoda in Yangyang (a treasure) built in the Joseon Dynasty but following Goryeo era style, and the Haesugwaneum Floating Sarira Pagoda and stele with sarira relics and relic ornaments discovered at Naksansa (a treasure) including the Buddha’s true sarira relics. In 2005, a large forest fire destroyed over 20 temple buildings including the bronze bell which was designated a treasure. Temple stay applications can be made through the Naksansa website. ◎ Travel info to experience the charm of Korean Wave - It is recommended to walk on the 'Path where dreams come true,' where Reno walked, placing a small stone on many stone pagodas and making a wish.
