Haean Basin is an erosion basin in Korea formed by differential erosion. The high mountains outside the basin are composed of metamorphic sedimentary rock, while the lower parts are made of Mesozoic granite. Cracks form at the boundary between the metamorphic rock and granite, and water seeps through these cracks, breaking down the granite to create a concave basin shape. The name Haean comes from the idea that as snakes disappeared due to pig farming, pigs brought comfort to the village. During the Korean War (6.25 War), the unique shape of the basin led the UN forces to also call it Punch Bowl.
