Sangju Central Market is a traditional market located in downtown Sangju, continuing the legacy of the Sangju eupnaejang established since the Joseon Dynasty. The eupnaejang was originally formed south of the former Myeongseong Theater site and expanded in size during the late Japanese colonial period. In 1987, a permanent central market building was constructed, and on market days (the 2nd and 7th of each month), the entire road becomes an open-air street market known as Sangju Oiljang. Alongside market improvements, from 2006, ‘Traditional Market Love Tour’ initiatives were promoted by residents of large cities and hometown associations. Since 2007, various cultural events have been held, including intangible cultural heritage performances like tightrope walking, talchum dance plays, and jisinbalgi rituals. The market sells Sangju specialties as well as agricultural products and fruits, and goods can also be purchased on non-market days. Supported by Sangju city, young entrepreneurs operate workshops, flower shops, and cafes in the market to revitalize the area and redefine traditional value.
