Hwangmaesan, the last subpeak of the Taebaek Mountain Range (太白山脈), is known as the place where the patriotic monk Muhakdaesa practiced asceticism during the Goryeo Dynasty. The area, including nearby Hwangmaebong, is beautifully formed by rocky cliffs to the southeast and is often called a small Geumgangsan for its scenery. From the summit, the surrounding view resembles a blooming plum blossom, giving a mysterious feeling as if floating alone inside the flower, hence the name Hwangmaesan. In the name, Hwang (黃) means wealth, and Mae (梅) means nobility, symbolizing overall prosperity. It is also said that anyone who prays with sincere devotion will have one wish granted. Especially famous are the azaleas that bloom in brilliant scarlet, covering tens of thousands of pyeong on the plateau in May.
