Hongju Hyanggyo is said to have been established during the Goryeo Dynasty, but the exact founding date is unknown due to lack of concrete evidence. Repairs of Hongju Hyanggyo can be verified from the late 19th century. In 1871 (Gojong 8), the Daeseongjeon was renovated, and in 1880, the east and west annexes and the central triple gate were newly constructed. In 1893, Daeseongjeon was again renovated; in 1914, both Daeseongjeon and the rear garden were repaired, and in 1924, the entire Munmyo was restored. In modern times, major repairs occurred in 1958, 1972, and 1995. The buildings follow the Jeonhakhu-myo style with Myeongnyundang in front and Daeseongjeon at the rear facing directly south on a low hill. The east and west dormitories that were originally on both sides of Myeongnyundang’s front were dismantled during the Japanese occupation, leaving only the Jeonsacheong. Daeseongjeon is three kan wide and three kan deep; one kan in front is an open porch. The precinct contains the east and west annexes and a ritual utensil storage. Notably, Confucian architectural stone features such as the Mangryodae (burning altar for ritual papers), Cheongryodae (light stand), and Gwansudae (hand washing basin) remain. According to , during the early Joseon period, a sixth-rank professor was dispatched to Hongju Hyanggyo, and under the Jeodok system in the mid-Joseon period, a sixth-rank civil official was appointed as Jeodok-gwan.
