Hwanggok Seowon was established in 1633 (11th year of King Injo's reign). Originally, Geomam Jeongsa was built in Geomgye to study academics, attracting virtuous scholars from nearby and distant areas who brought classics and sought teachings. Following this, Hwanggok Seodang was rebuilt and renamed Hwanggok Seowon for the purpose of educating future generations. It was abolished by the Seowon Abolition Decree in 1871 (8th year of King Gojong's reign) but restored and renovated in 1981. The inauguration ceremony was conducted under the supervision of Confucian scholars from Haman Hyanggyo and representatives of various clans. The spatial arrangement of the buildings, including the shrine, seowon, and side gates, was based on auspicious locations according to feng shui geomantic principles.
