Designated as a cultural heritage material of Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1985, Hayang Hyanggyo's exact construction date is unknown. However, records show that Heo Jo, a prime minister in the early Joseon Dynasty, was from here, and that there was a Hyanggyo located 3 ri west of the county, suggesting it was built in the late Goryeo or early Joseon period. After the decline of Hayang-hyeon due to the Imjin War, the Hyanggyo fell into disrepair but was rebuilt in 1608. It has undergone multiple restorations, including the reconstruction of Myeongnyundang, repair of the shrine (Myou) and dormitories (Dangjae). Hayang Hyanggyo follows the typical jeonhakhu-myo style with the Outer Sammun gate, Myeongnyundang, Inner Sammun gate, and Daeseongjeon aligned in a straight line. Within the compound remain the Jeonsacheong office, Tool Storage, and the manager’s residence. Annual ceremonies are held on the first jeong-il of the 2nd and 8th lunar months. Additionally, regular events such as the Giro-yeon honoring local Confucian scholars and elders are held, and character education programs for local middle school students aim to preserve and develop traditional culture.
