Hogajeong is a pavilion built in the later years by Seolgang Yusa (雪江柳泗) (1502–1571), a civil official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty and the reign of King Myeongjong. The name Hogajeong was derived from the meaning of Hogajiui (浩歌之意) mentioned by Song Dynasty's Su Shi. The pavilion was first constructed in 1558 (the 13th year of King Myeongjong's reign) but was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and 1597. It was rebuilt in 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong's reign) and later renovated in 1932 and 1956. The pavilion has a hipped and gabled roof with three bays on both the front and side, originally with a central living room, which was removed during renovation and replaced entirely with a well-type wooden floor. Each corner has a one-bay low railing. A stepping stone is placed in the center bay on all sides for ease of entrance. Located at the foot of Nopyeongsan, where the Geukrakgang and Hwangryonggang rivers meet, the site offers a scenic view. The pavilion displays plaques including the Hogajeong signboard, Seolgang’s Hogajeong record, Nosa Gi Jeongjin’s Hogajeong reconstruction record, descendant Yoo Bohane’s Hogajeong renovation record, Hogajeong poetic verses, Gyeon Cha Seolgang poetic verses, Gyeon Cha Pansang poetic verses, and poetic inscriptions by O-gyeom, Lee Annul, and Kim Seongwon.
