Gwangju Park, once called Seonggeosan during the Joseon Dynasty, is the closest resting place for citizens in downtown Gwangju. Here stands the Hyeonchungtap, built to honor the loyalty of those who died fighting to protect the country. It enshrines 15,867 war dead from Gwangju and Jeonnam regions who sacrificed their lives during the 1950 Korean War (10,745 soldiers, 5,122 police), but there are no spirit tablets. The tower has a hexagonal base and is 25m tall, with walls etched with a summary, historical evaluation, and battle situations of the Korean War to recall the sacrifice of the 6·25 war heroes. Every year on June 6, Memorial Day, a commemorative ceremony is held to honor their noble spirits.
