Hapdeokje is one of the three great reservoirs of Joseon, along with Hwanghaedo Yeonan Namdaeji and Gimje Byeokgolje. Estimated to have been constructed before the Goryeo Dynasty, Hapdeokje is currently used as farmland, with only the long embankment used for water storage remaining in its original shape. The embankment is characterized by its curved form. Hapdeokje has long been considered a place one must visit at least once. According to legend, when a person dies and goes before King Yeomra, the king asks, “Have you been to Hapdeokje during your lifetime?” If the answer is, “No, I have not,” King Yeomra scolds them, asking, “What did you do in life that you did not even visit the famous Hapdeokje?” Nearby is the Hapdeok Water Management Folk Museum, built to commemorate Hapdeokje and to learn from the wisdom of ancestors who recognized the importance of water management early on. The museum displays items related to ancestor’s water management farming culture at a glance. It also features more than 20 water management and farming experience tools, allowing visitors to actively engage and experience rather than simply observe.
