Hwajangsa is located in Cheonnaeri, Hwawon-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Gwangyeoksi, and is a branch temple of Donghwasa, the head temple of the 9th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded around 1925 through the vow of Bo Won Geosa Kim Young-ok, and after his passing, seven relics appeared and a stupa was erected. It was rebuilt in the 1980s when monk Jiwoo resided here. The temple complex includes Guknakbojeon, Wontongjeon, Chilseonggak, Iljumun, and temple living quarters. In Guknakbojeon, a mural depicting Amitabha Buddha preaching in the Western Paradise hangs on the back wall, and the altar contains Sakyamuni Buddha in the center flanked by Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. The main hall Guknakbojeon houses a small Amitabha Buddha statue presumed to be a jade Buddha from the Silla period; it is smaller than the building because it was moved here from Yonghwajeon, the original main hall, during reconstruction. There are three dolmens included in the Cheonnaeri Dolmen Cluster, a Daegu Gwangyeoksi monument, within the Hwajangsa grounds and one dolmen in the temple’s wall, making this a special place where prehistoric relics can be seen.
