Established as a cattle market from the late Joseon period, it developed into a regular market and is known as a cattle market famous for calves. Until the 1970s, it was bustling with cattle herders driving cows from Jinju, Gyeongnam, and Namwon, Jeonbuk. A herder usually drives 4–5 cattle, but skilled herders drove up to ten cattle. Until the 1970s, the daily average number of trades exceeded 100 head, but now, due to the increase in specialized cattle farms and improved transportation, trading patterns have changed, and the scale has shrunk to about 40 head on average. It operates both as a permanent market and a five-day market. In 2011, 11.3 billion won was invested to modernize the facilities and install an arcade. It features modern buildings, a specialized pork market, a specialty product sales area, and a performance hall. At Boseong Market, a local favorite is Teukmigan, known for its green tea tteokgalbi and cockle bibimbap.
