The origin of Boeun Market dates back to the late 18th century. Records in the town's gazette note that Dusansi (斗山市) was held in Bukmyeon on the 3rd and 8th days. In the 1860s, Hwoein had markets on the 4th and 9th days in the town and on the 3rd and 8th days in Dusan. In Boeun, markets were held on the 5th and 10th days in the town, on the 2nd and 7th days at Wonam, on the 1st and 6th days at Gwangi, and on the 4th and 9th days at Maro. This pattern shows that twice a month from the beginning to the tenth day, markets rotated in the order of Gwangi, Wonam, Dusan, Maro and Hwoein, and Boeun Market. Boeun Market, with this deep origin, was established in the 1960s and flourished as a major market following Cheongju and Jecheon markets. Although it declined in the 1970s due to economic development and improved transportation, it still maintains its reputation as a market where regional specialties thrive. The merchants’ association actively strives for the market's revitalization.
