Yoseonjeong is a pavilion located in Suju-myeon Mureung-ri, with a clear water flowing valley in front. On a large riverside rock, there is an inscribed carving called Yoseonam. Yoseonjeong was a place frequently visited for Buddhist propagation by Cheolgam Guksa Doyun and Jinghyo Daesa, who in the Unified Silla period, a peak of Buddhism, opened Heungnyeong Seonwon at the foothills of Sajasan nearby. It is said there was a small hermitage at that time. Also, when Jinghyo Daesa attained nirvana here, over a thousand sarira (Buddhist relics) appeared, marking this place's deep Buddhist significance. Today, a Maaeyeorae sitting statue and a small stone pagoda remain near the pavilion. In front of Yoseonjeong, water from Chiaksan merges with Beophungcheon flowing past the old Heungnyeong Seonwon site, forming a clear valley. The riverbed has large water-smoothed rocks creating a beautiful valley. The riverside rock bears the carving Yoseonam, from which the place got its name. This calligraphy was inscribed by Yang Bongrae (楊蓬來), a Joseon dynasty poet and calligrapher, who visited here with celestial maidens during his term as Pyeongchang county magistrate. The characters 邀僊 (Yoseon) or 邀仙 (Yoseon) mean “inviting immortals.”
Panu-ri in Yeongwol-gun is famous for its clear waters and lush greenery in summer, but it is well known for the seopdari bridge in winter. Seopdari bridges were once common in Yeongwol and Jeongseon areas but have mostly disappeared due to modern bridges, becoming unique cultural sights. Seopdari bridges are made of logs, pine branches, and mud. Every year after harvest, villagers gather around late October to build the bridge over 4-5 days, then dismantle it before the rainy season starts in mid-May. Strong ash wood is placed upside down in a Y-shape, with thick pine and oak forming the frame, pine branches covering the deck, and mud topping it. This seopdari, likened to a centipede's legs, is built by stacking stones without nails, requiring precise work using only axes and chisels for the pillars and beams. The Panu-ri seopdari, located in front of the Panu Village Hall, connects Bamdu Village with many chestnut trees across the Pyeongchanggang River to Midari Village on the opposite side. The name Midari comes from the absence of a bridge during summer rains when the seopdari would wash away, as the village is surrounded on three sides by the river. Now, a well-maintained riverside road allows comfortable access for tourists. This village has been selected as an 'Excellent Village for New Rural Construction in Gangwon-do' with eco-friendly farming, and in winter, residents collectively make traditional meju soy bricks, aged for months in a yellow earth room, using soybeans grown locally in Yeongwol and sell them.
Named for its resemblance to the Korean Peninsula, this terrain was formed by the erosive action of an incised meandering river flowing around the Hanbando terrain. Here, you can observe limestone found in this region, the meandering Seogang River, the formation process of the Hanbando terrain, dolines, and the uses of limestone. Byeolmalo Observatory is a compound word of 'Byeol (Star)', 'Maru (Summit)', and 'Ro (Calm Road)', meaning 'a calm summit to view the stars.' It is located at the summit of Bongnae-san at an altitude of 799.8m, offering optimal observing conditions among citizen observatories. The observatory is equipped with an 800mm main telescope and several auxiliary telescopes for observing the moon, planets, stars, and various celestial bodies. The Bongnae-san summit where the observatory stands has a gliding field with an open view to enjoy the surrounding scenery. The night view of Yeongwol-eup town from the mountain summit offers a different kind of impression alongside celestial observation. Besides the celestial observation room and planetarium, there is a media zone to appreciate the beautiful forms of the universe. On the third floor, a cafe overlooking the panoramic view of Bongnae-san allows visitors to enjoy fresh coffee while gazing at the open scenery.
