Cheongho Seowon | 観光地情報 | K-Travel Mate

This seowon was established to commemorate four Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty: Modang Son Cheonul (1553–1634), Sawoldang Ryu Sibun, Yanggye Jeong Hoin, and Modang's sixth-generation descendant Gyeokjae Son Joseo. Modang Son Cheonul, whose courtesy name was Gido, studied under Han-gang Jeong Gu and was recognized by his teacher for his scholarship and filial piety. He led militia forces during the Imjin and Jeongyu Japanese invasions. During the turmoil, he lost his parents and, lamenting his failure to properly honor them, named his residence Yeongmodang after the conflict ended to symbolize lifelong mourning. Afterwards, he devoted himself to educating the next generation, with Yeongmodang always bustling with visitors. The 'Yeongmodang Tonggang Jeoja Rok' lists 202 disciples, indicating the institution's scale. He also created Cheonghoji Pond in front of the village to promote farming and declined official rewards, serving only as the head Do-yusa of Daegu Hyanggyo for 12 years. Son Joseo, an early Joseon official, passed the state examination, served as Hanlim scholar at Jiphyeonjeon, formed a close friendship with Piljae, and, upon hearing of King Danjong's death, resigned his post to return to his hometown of Miryang to teach. Cheongho Seowon was abolished in 1864 under the seowon abolition order, partially rebuilt with a lecture hall around 1947, destroyed by fire in 1968, and reconstructed in 1969 with the lecture hall and shrine Sanginsa to enshrine memorial tablets.
