This is the historic site of Yi Yi (Yulgok Lee I, 1536–1584), a mid-Joseon Confucian scholar and statesman. Yi developed the teachings of Toegye Yi Hwang further, laying the foundation of Joseon Neo-Confucianism, distinct from Chinese Neo-Confucianism, leaving a significant legacy in Korean intellectual history. The Paju Yi Yi Historic Site represents Yulgok Yi Yi-related heritage, gathering cultural assets originating from one figure in one place, including Jauinseowon, the shrine dedicated to Yi, and the family burial grounds containing Yi and his mother Shin Saimdang’s tomb. Located at the foot of Jauinsam mountain, the site includes the family burial grounds and Jauinseowon shrine housing his spirit tablets. The family burial grounds center around Yi Yi and his wife Lady Nogosan, with the joint tomb of his parents Lee Won-su and Shin Saimdang, his elder brother Yi Seon, and son Yi Gyeongnim; in total, 14 family graves are present. Jauinseowon was established in 1615 (Gwanghaegun 7) to commemorate Yi’s scholarship and virtue, was granted the name 'Jauin' (Purple Cloud) in 1650 (Hyojong 1), and enshrined additional disciples Kim Jangsaeng and Park Sechae in 1713 (Sukjong 39). It was abolished in 1868 (Gojong 5) under the Daewon-gun’s Confucian academy abolition, then restored in 1970 with funds from Confucian scholars and national support. Also onsite are the memorial stele for Jauinseowon built in 1683 (Sukjong 9), the Yi Yi memorial stele, and the Yulgok Memorial Hall exhibiting Yi’s relics and biography. Jauinseowon, Yulgok Yi Yi’s tomb, and Shin Saimdang’s tomb were designated Gyeonggi-do cultural assets in 1973, and the entire historical site was designated National Historic Site No. 525 in February 2013 due to its significance as a consolidated place of Yi Yi-related heritage.
화석정은 원래 고려 말의 유학자인 길재(吉再)가 조선이 개국하자 벼슬을 버리고 향리에 돌아와 후학을 양성하던 곳이었는데 사후 그를 추모하여 서원을 세웠다고 한다.
