In 2007, a 6.9 km section from the old downtown Bukhang area to Yudalsan, the original downtown, Samhakdo, Gatbawi, and the new downtown Pyeonghwa Plaza was designated as a maritime culture tourism special zone. Traces of the Japanese colonial era remain throughout, allowing visitors to explore the history of the period through sites like the old Mokpo Japanese Consulate and the Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space. The sea also offers many attractions, making it a cultural area where past and present coexist. The most visually appealing areas are Yudalsan and Gatbawi, featuring natural scenery as well as cultural spaces such as the Mokpo Natural History Museum and the National Maritime Relics Exhibition Hall. Every April, the Mokpo Yudalsan Spring Festival is held, offering a variety of activities including the sugun parade, sugun cultural military experience, concerts, and hands-on programs. Samhakdo is the stage for the annual Mokpo Harbor Festival and, under normal conditions, a pleasant place to walk along the coast connected by a bridge to the land. Mokpo locals say the city has five representative flavors: minhoe sashimi, braised hairtail, fermented skate with pork and kimchi, three-legged octopus, and seasoned crab meat. Visitors can experience not only fresh seafood and flavorful dishes from the pristine waters around Mokpo but also the beautiful natural scenery alongside history and culture spanning the modern era.
Mokpo is a port city located at the southwesternmost tip of South Korea, where Yudalsan Mountain, the Yeongsan River flowing through Honam's fertile land, and the archipelago Sea harmonize. Yudalsan has long been called Yeongdalsan, meaning a place where souls pass by. Dalseong Park at the foot of Yudalsan serves as a resting place for citizens filled with the spirit and culture of ancestors, and from the top, visitors can view the archipelago Sea and the cityscape. Yudalsan and Dalseong Park are not distinctly separated, with trails around Yudalsan, walking paths, and hiking routes connected. From Bogwangsa Temple, famous for its spring, and Soyojeong Pavilion at the mountain's summit, you can see Mokpo city, the Mokpo Marine Cable Car (the longest cable car in Korea), and the floodgate of the Yeongsan River. Walking the Yudalsan trail connected to Dalseong Park, visitors can see a specific native plant conservatory made of glass greenhouses. Additionally, you can visit the Nokpo's Tear Song Monument, the Yudalsan Sculpture Park, and Dalseongsa Temple, as well as engage in wood-related experience activities at the Wood Culture Experience Center.
Mokpo Jayu Market is a merchant-operated market established through a savings movement by the merchants themselves. Known for its delicious food and high-quality products, it attracts customers not only from Mokpo but also from nearby areas, making it a market with high sales. Merchants wear name tags with the phrase “We will serve you kindly” to impress customers, and a 100% exchange and refund policy has been introduced to enhance customer satisfaction. Additionally, the strong unity among merchants allows for voluntary training sessions.
