📍 Chungcheongbuk-do Jeungpyeong-gun Jeungpyeong-eup Jangtteul-ro 58-1
Jeungpyeong-gun in Chungcheongbuk-do, surrounded by Eumseong, Cheongju, and Goesan, is home to Jangtteul Market. It is a permanent market always open, but it becomes livelier on the 1st and 6th of each month when the market days are held. In the Goryeo period, Jeungpyeong Market belonged to Cheongdang-hyeon and Doan-hyeon, later becoming Cheongan-hyeon and Cheongan-gun in the Joseon period. In 1914, Cheongan-gun was divided by the Japanese into Cheongwon, Jincheon, and Goesan, and the Jeungpyeong area developed with the opening of the Chungbuk Line connecting Cheongju and Jeungpyeong on May 1, 1923, which led to the activation of permanent markets and 5-day markets (on the 1st and 6th). Located at the border of the four counties of Eumseong, Goesan, Jincheon, and Cheongwon, Jeungpyeong Market rapidly grew and was promoted to Jeungpyeong-eup in August 13, 1949. From 1963, private movements began for promoting Jeungpyeong to an independent gun (county), and after its autonomous gun status in 2003, it has remained a representative traditional market of Jeungpyeong. This site, near Jeungpyeong Station, was called 'Jangtteul' meaning 'market field' because a market was held here, and the market also adopted this name. It has been a traditional market at the same place for nearly 100 years. The entire market street is about 200 meters long in a single line, with over 100 shops including street vendors, and on market days, grandmothers selling vegetables they brought fill the market street. Jeungpyeong Blacksmith is a notable spot preserving the fading old scenery of Jangtteul Market. Opened in 1974, its forge fire has never gone out. The blacksmith owner, Mr. Choi Yong-jin, says handling iron is the easiest task, a natural-born blacksmith. Starting as an assistant at age sixteen, he concentrated on hammering, making 500 hoes when others made 150. While blacksmith shops across the country disappeared with the rise of mass production, he persevered. Recognized as the nation's first functional holder in blacksmithing and designated Chungcheongbuk-do intangible cultural asset No. 9, he is considered a leading master in his field.
