Seowon were private educational institutions of the Joseon Dynasty established to perform rites for distinguished Confucian scholars and educate local residents. Hyochung Seowon is a seowon located in Imsil-eup, Imsil-gun, honoring the filial piety of the father-son pair Kim Bok-gyu and Kim Gi-jong. It was established in the 6th year of King Cheoljong of Joseon (1885), built under royal order by Seo Yu-hun, the vice-minister of personnel. Within the seowon are a lecture hall, Hyochung Shrine, the old administrative office, and two memorial stone tablets (Jeongryeobi) commemorating Kim Bok-gyu and Kim Gi-jong. Jeongryeobi are stone tablets erected at the entrance of villages to honor the conduct and spirit of loyal subjects, filial sons, and virtuous women. These tablets are designated as tangible cultural assets of Jeollabuk-do.
