Pureungil Fountain Park | 観光地情報 | K-Travel Mate

Pureungil Fountain Park was formerly the Gyeongjeon Line railway that went from Gwangju through Suncheon to Busan. It was a beloved railway that served as the transportation lifeline in the southern region, but passing through the city center caused severe traffic congestion and noise. Eventually, as the Gyeongjeon Line was relocated outside the city, environmental activists and citizens actively transformed the old railway into Korea's first park created on a decommissioned railway site. Reborn as a resting place for Gwangju residents, the park features a marker indicating the site of the old tunnel and large green trees that have stood in place for many years, evoking warm memories of the railway. On one side of the park is architect Seung Hyo-sang's work 'Pureungil Cultural Shelter.' Made of weather-resistant steel that recalls the rusted railway tracks, this work serves as both an exhibition space capturing Gwangju's old appearance and a resting area.
