Geumosan is a mountain rising from a branch of the Sobaek mountain range and was designated as a provincial park in 1970 with developed tourist facilities. The entire mountain is made of rock, featuring many steep cliffs. A cable car is installed from the foot of the mountain to the waterfall. Since ancient times, it has been one of the Yeongnam 8 scenic spots, with Yaksaam near the summit, Myeonggeum Waterfall (38m tall) halfway up the northern slope, and Haeunsa Temple, built by the Silla monk Doseon. Other attractions include Doseon Cave and the Ma-ae Bodhisattva Standing Statue. The cable car, constructed from the entrance passing Chaemijeong to beside Haeunsa, offers great convenience to visitors. With decks and stairs, it is good for light walks, and the cable car makes it accessible for the elderly. The hiking courses are well developed.
Dorisa Temple is known as the birthplace of Haedong Buddhism and the first temple of Silla, established during the 19th king Nulji (417 AD) by the Goguryeo monk Ado Hwasang, who first introduced Buddhism to Silla where it was previously absent. While searching for a place to practice, Ado Hwasang found this site in winter with peach and plum flowers blooming, seeing it as a good location. With the donation of Morye Jangja, the temple was built and named Dorisa, derived from the peach and plum blossoms. As the sacred site where Ado Hwasang brought the true relics of Buddha (Sejon) to Silla, a gilt bronze hexagonal sarira container was discovered during the restoration of the Sejon Sarira Pagoda in 1976. The gilt bronze sarira container dates from the mid-8th century, designated National Treasure No. 208, and is currently held by the Jikjisa Sacred Treasure Museum. Founded about 70 years before Buddhism was officially recognized in 514 AD (King Beopheung’s 14th year), Dorisa holds valuable cultural properties including the Hwaeom stone pagoda (a treasure), a statue of Ado Hwasang (newly erected in 2002), the Sejon Sarira Pagoda, a stele of Ado Hwasang’s site, and late Joseon Dynasty Buddhist paintings. The temple also operates a templestay to promote Buddhist doctrine and culture.
