Chunghyeon Seowon | 観光地情報 | K-Travel Mate

Chunghyeon Seowon was established in 1581 (14th year of King Seonjo) to commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Zhu Xi, Lee Jon-oh, Seong Je-won, and Lee Mok by enshrining their memorial tablets. It was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 and restored in 1610 (2nd year of King Gwanghae). In 1625, it was granted the name 'Chunghyeon' and enshrined additional figures such as Jo Heon, Kim Jang-saeng, Song Jun-gil, and Song Si-yeol, serving both as a place of ancestral rites and regional education. It was dismantled in 1871 (8th year of King Gojong) under the Daewon-gun's decree to abolish seowons, and restored in 1976 to the present. Buildings on site include a three-kan shrine, the central Sinmun gate flanked by side gates forming a three-gate structure, a six-kan lecture hall, a monument to Chunghyeon Seowon, a monument narrating the history and Song Woo-am's dedication, and a prohibition stone. The site was designated a Chungcheongnam-do monument in 1984, and a portrait of Zhu Xi held here was designated a tangible cultural asset of Chungcheongnam-do in 2011. Currently, it hosts programs such as "Kkomurak Kkoma Seonbi," where youth experience Seonbi culture design linked with nearby tourist sites; an open talk show "Gonggam Talk Go-cheong Sarangbang" led by local residents; "Bakyakdang Character Education Class," offering etiquette and tea ceremony experiences and storytelling on the Parkmun-Yakrye Path for free-semester students; and "Infinite Imagination Seonbi Play," fostering Seonbi leadership among free-semester students.
