Haroseowon, located in Yangcheon-dong, Gimcheon-si, traces its origins to Gyeongnyeom Seowon, which was established in 1648 (26th year of King Injo) under the initiative of county magistrate Jo Song-nyeon to honor five virtuous men: Kim Jong-jik, Choi Seon-mun, Lee Yak-dong, Jo Wi, and Kim Si-chang. The seowon was abolished in 1868 due to the Seowon Abolition Act by Heungseon Daewongun, but it was independently restored in 1984 by the Byeokjin Lee clan and renamed Haroseowon, enshrining only the spirit tablet of Pyeongjeonggong Lee Yak-dong. Annual memorial rites are held every spring and autumn; the spring rite takes place on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month, and the autumn rite substitutes a ritual at the seowon. Buildings within the seowon include Yeongsamun, the outer three-gate; Cheongbaeksa, the shrine; Yeojaemun, the outer gate of the memorial space; Sukgyeongmun, the inner gate; Nochondang, the lecture hall; and the dormitories Yeomsudang and Pilyudang, along with a monument pavilion. Lee Yak-dong, who is enshrined here, passed the Jeunggwangmungwa in 1451 (1st year of Munjong), served as Naval Commander of Gyeongsang Left Province in 1474 (5th year of Seongjong), and held positions including Mayor of Gyeongju, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Taxation, Vice Chief of the Chunchu Department, Governor of Jeolla Province, Mayor of Hanseong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, and Commander of Gaeseong before retiring as Vice Chief of the Chunchu Department in 1491.
