Located in Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, Chungnam, Baekjehyang has been converted from a lotus leaf rice specialty restaurant into a café selling lotus bread and traditional tea. It is situated on the way to Gungnamji Pond. The representative menu item, Buyeo lotus bread, is a distinctive food shaped like the lotus flower, a symbol of Baekje culture. Not only shaped like a lotus flower, the bread is made by mixing lotus leaf powder, glutinous rice flour, and wheat flour with water boiled from lotus flowers and lotus leaves that the owner cultivates pesticide-free. To capture the aroma of the lotus in the bread, the petals are picked before 8 a.m., before they open, and stored frozen for use. In addition, various snacks made with lotus leaves such as lotus leaf shakes and lotus leaf cookies can also be enjoyed.
Daejosa (Buyeo) is a temple located on the southern foothill of Seongheungsan (260.1m) in the southern part of Buyeo-gun. Like the nearby Garim Fortress, it was built in the early 6th century and boasts a history of nearly 1,500 years, featuring high stone walls resembling a mountain fortress. According to legend, an old monk was meditating under this rock when one day a large bird perched on the rock and he dozed off; upon waking, the rock had transformed into the statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva, leading to the temple being called Daejosa. The stone standing statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva, about 10m high, built on a large rock where Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva appeared, is designated a treasure. This statue is one of the giant stone Maitreya Bodhisattva statues popular during the Goryeo Dynasty, rivaling the Seokjo Maitreya Bodhisattva of Gwanchoksa Temple in Nonsan. Overall, it is highly regarded as a Bodhisattva statue that shows the same regional style as the Gwanchoksa stone Maitreya Bodhisattva. The stone pagoda standing in front of Daejosa Wontongbojeon was made in the Goryeo Dynasty and restored from partial remains and is designated as Chungcheongnam-do cultural heritage material. A wooden seated Bodhisattva statue believed to be made in the late Joseon Dynasty is also designated as Chungcheongnam-do tangible cultural heritage. Nearby tourist attractions include Seongheungsan, Buyeo Garim Fortress, Imcheon Hyanggyo, Imcheon Market, and Bokgeum Reservoir.
Buyeo Garim Fortress is a mountain fortress built on Seongheungsan (260.1m) in the southern part of Buyeo-gun. It is a strategic site located between Buyeo Sabi Fortress and the Geum River estuary, said to have been constructed by Baekje King Dongseong to protect Sabi Fortress. The fortress is relatively easy to enjoy, as the distance from the parking lot below Garim Fortress to the South Gate site is about 200m. There is a memorial shrine called Chunghonsa honoring those who participated in the Baekje Restoration Movement. At the summit where Seongheungru is installed, there is a panoramic view with a wide-open sight in all directions, overlooking Nonsan Gang-gyeong and the lower Geum River, with spectacular sunrises and sunsets. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Korean waves - Buyeo Garim Fortress, holding Manwol’s past from the drama including friendship with Yeon-woo and anger toward Cheong-myeong, offers a full view of Buyeo city and has become a new SNS hotspot with unique photos taken under the zelkova tree called the Love Tree.
