Haepyeong-ri Stone Jangseung | 観光地情報 | K-Travel Mate

Jangseung are a form of folk faith serving as village guardians or protective spirits placed at village entrances or roadsides. Haepyeong-ri Stone Jangseung appear as a pair of male and female figures and are located at both sides of the entrance road to the village on the eastern foothills of Obongsan in Boseong. On the right side toward the village, standing backed by a stone wall, is 'Sangwondang Janggun' (female figure), and directly across the road on the left, slightly lower, stands 'Hawonju Janggun' (male figure). Sangwondang Janggun has a shaven head with an almost flat face, featuring a wrinkled forehead, seagull-shaped eyebrows, round eyes, bat-shaped nose, clearly expressed nostrils, faintly carved teeth between slightly parted lips, and vine-like patterns carved on the chin. Hawonju Janggun is male with a shaven head and a rectangular pillar-shaped body, a deeply wrinkled forehead, raised eyebrows, protruding eyes, a pug nose with pronounced nostrils, a long closed mouth, finely carved ears on both sides, and thickly sculpted beard. Originally, they guarded the entrance of Gaeheungsa Temple but were moved to this village to serve as village guardians praying for smooth tax transportation by sea and for the peace and stability of the residents.
