Yeombulam is a branch temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism’s 2nd district. The founding of Yeombulsa is connected to the legend of Samsung Mountain. During the reign of King Munmu of Silla, three monks—Wonhyo, Uisang, and Yunpil—entered this mountain. Wonhyo established Sammuak Temple, Uisang built Yeonjuam Hermitage, and Yunpil built Yeombulsa Temple, each leading a monastic life respectively in their temples. Yeombulsa's greatest pride is its beautiful scenery where bizarre rock formations and dense forests surround the mid-slope of Samsung Mountain like a folding screen. The temple buildings are situated at different heights according to their hierarchy, offering distinctly different views from each building.
